WELCOME TO THE SONS!
Live and Learn the Jedi way.
How it started
The Sons of Obiwan Saber Academy was founded in 2015 by ex-school teacher Luke Boyton as a test bed for new, meaningful ways to teach life skills to kids on the spectrum. After six years in the NSW school system, Luke recognised the need for students to learn more than just the curriculum and the lack of content that focused on giving the students the tools and skills to better know themselves. Over the years we developed a world-first system using theatre combat to teach Cognitive and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy so that the student learns vital skills such as resilience, overcoming the discomfort of learning something new and embracing failure as part of the learning process. Whilst Luke started this to work with special needs, we found that everyone is special needs in their own way and they all need to learn the same skills. By helping people to become more acquainted with their true selves, we are preparing them to better deal with the larger world. We are a volunteer organisation.
What do we do?
Monday to Thursday, we run 32 classes at the Temple, half are for privates or groups, and the other half are adults and kids group classes. We work with special needs, at-risk youth, school sport and special needs groups.
On the weekends we tour the length and breadth of Australia doing shows, lessons, conventions, parties and corporate events to subsidise the lessons at the Temple so we can keep them cheap and accessible.
We are also a manufacturer, producing sabers and theatre combat weapons for ourselves and the community. These are all Australian-made and sourced, with the work done by ourselves and a group of small businesses and craftspeople around the Central Coast and Sydney.
